After the arrival of Arahat Mahinda Theo in Sri Lanka, Buddhist culture has developed. It was the period of king Dewanampiyathissa. As a result, hundreds of historical sites reflecting ancient Buddhist culture are found all over the country. One such historical site is Maligawila. It is in Monaragala district. Local and foreign tourists visit this place frequently. Maligawila is the best known for its huge free standing buddha statue of the country. It is 14.5 meters tall. It is discovered in 1951 in a dilapidated condition fallen, broken and broken into pieces. In 1990 the statue was raised and restored.
